Training Offered on Hazard Identification and Assessment

Property inspections are a useful tool for identifying the hazards that could result in a claim or lawsuit. Municipalities need to be able to assess the risks that exist in their buildings and on their properties. These inspections will help reduce risks and lessen the impact of hazards in the future. Examples of items that need regular inspection include

  • roof inspections – detecting leaks and potential water damage,
  • building inspections – assess hazards associated with donated and unoccupied buildings, and
  • fire prevention – inspecting fire extinguishers and fire protection valves.

Risk Management Services will offer a Hazard Identification and Assessment training on February 27, 2024. Ken Botes of Marsh Advisory, one of SC Municipal Insurance and Risk Financing Fund’s property brokers, will present the first half of the session. He will discuss why property inspections are important, how often they should be conducted, what documentation is required and how to address any issues that may be found during the inspection.

During the second half of the session, David Morrison, SCMIRF defense attorney, will discuss liability associated with slip and falls. SCMIRF Claims Manager Michael Waslewski will also provide a data review of recent SCMIRF claims.

Registration for the training will open on January 16, 2024. For more information on upcoming training, contact Joy Gloster, training and data analyst at jgloster@masc.sc.
