Municipal Judge, Town of West Pelzer
The purpose of the Municipal Judge is to coordinate judicial activities for Municipal Court, to conduct hearings and adjudicate cases in court, and to perform related judicial and administrative work as required.
Coordinates, schedules, and participates in all judicial activities of the Municipal Court, ensuring compliance with policies, procedures, laws and regulations. Supervises Court Clerk; supervisory duties include instructing, planning and assigning work, reviewing work, maintaining standards, etc. Coordinates Municipal Court activities with S.C. Court Administration as required. Schedules and conducts conferences with police officers, attorneys, defendants, victims, and the Town Attorney regarding cases as necessary.
Issues arrest, bench, and search warrants; prepares and authorizes service of jury summonses, witness subpoenas, detention orders, release orders and other court orders. Adjudicates criminal and traffic cases. Rules on motions and drafts orders, judgments, and decisions. Conducts legal research as necessary. Files required reports with the S.C. Court Administration and other officials as necessary. Performs general administrative work as necessary, including but not limited to preparing reports and correspondence, entering and retrieving computer data, etc.
Requires performing work involving the application of principles of logical thinking or legal practice to diagnose/define problems; requires application of mathematics (addition/subtraction, ratios, rates, data analysis, and percentages), composition of reports (proper punctuation, grammar, and style), and requires professional-level work applying legal methods, extensive understanding of procedures, and close attention for accurate results.
Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree is preferred; education and training equivalent in legal studies or a closely related field.
Must possess a valid state driver’s license. Must complete Municipal Judge training courses as required.
