Palmetto Power Cities advances the interests of South Carolina’s municipal electric utilities by fostering collaboration, advocating on behalf of public power and supporting the delivery of reliable, community-owned electric service. We bring local utilities together to share expertise, respond collectively to challenges and navigate an evolving electric utility landscape.
Established in 1972 by a coalition of municipal electric systems, the organization was formed to coordinate mutual aid and provide a unified voice on issues affecting public power. As the role and reach of municipal utilities expanded, the organization evolved into Palmetto Power Cities—reflecting both its statewide impact and its forward-looking approach.
As a nonprofit association, Palmetto Power Cities provides legislative advocacy at the state and federal levels, educational programs, peer-to-peer information sharing and opportunities for engagement with associate members who support public power through goods and services. Collectively, our member utilities serve approximately 205,000 customers and deliver more than 2.46 million megawatt-hours of electricity annually, supporting the communities they power.
Palmetto Power Cities is an affiliate of the Municipal Association of South Carolina, aligning with municipalities across the state to promote effective, locally governed public services.
