School Resource Officer (SRO), Town of South Congaree
Under the general supervision of the Patrol Division Sgt., the SRO conducts law enforcement duties while assigned to a school. The SRO is responsible for maintaining a visible police presence, promoting a positive attitude toward law enforcement, & reducing juvenile crime through education, awareness, prevention, and enforcement efforts. Ensures compliance with all applicable laws, codes, policies, procedures, & standards relating to public safety & the welfare of students, faculty, and staff. The SRO performs law enforcement & administrative duties in stressful and/or high-risk conditions.
Maintains a safe & secure educational environment through proactive policing, relationship building, & crime prevention initiatives. Responsibilities: monitors student behavior during lunch periods, class transitions, & other school activities; maintains order on campus; patrols school grounds; responds to disturbances & emergencies; and investigates crimes occurring on school property or involving students. Works closely with administrators, faculty, parents, & community organizations to address safety concerns & support student success while fostering trust & positive relationships.
SRO serves as a mentor, educator, & resource to students, staff, & parents by promoting positive interactions with law enforcement & providing guidance on school safety matters. The officer participates in school & extracurricular activities, coordinates security measures for events, identifies gang activity, drug-related concerns, & other potential threats, & recommends or implements corrective actions when necessary. Communicates with parents regarding student law violations & refers families to appropriate community resources & support services when warranted.
The position requires the performance of general law enforcement duties throughout the Town as assigned. EDUCATION: High School Diploma or GED required. EXPERIENCE: Candidates must possess at least one year of experience as a certified law enforcement officer and demonstrate strong written and verbal communication skills, sound judgment, professionalism, and effective time management abilities. CERTIFICATIONS & LICENSURE: Successful completion of required law enforcement training & certifications is mandatory, including South Carolina Criminal Justice Academy (SCCJA) Class 1 Law
Enforcement certification. Must possess current School Resource Officer (SRO) certification through the SCCJA or an equivalent approved program at the time of application. A valid South Carolina driver's license is required. Strong analytical and decision-making skills are essential to effectively serve the public and ensure students, staff, and community safety. PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: Requires frequent physical activity, including sitting, standing, walking, climbing, crawling, kneeling, bending, reaching, & handling equipment throughout the workday.
Must be capable of frequently lifting objects weighing up to 50 lbs & occasionally lifting more than 100 lbs, as well as pushing & pulling substantial weight when necessary. Attends required training, maintaining firearm proficiency, performing administrative duties, & completing general building maintenance tasks as needed. The work environment presents no known unusual environmental hazards; however, normal visual acuity, color perception, hearing, depth perception, field of vision, speaking ability, & communication skills are required to safely & effectively perform essential job functions.
