Job Duties

The City’s Section Chief for Public Works provides hands‐on leadership, clear direction, and steady oversight for Traffic & Transportation, Public Services and Facilities.

This role focuses on shaping long‐term operational strategies, delivering reliable everyday services, and driving infrastructure improvements that support the City’s priorities.

The Section Chief leads multiple divisions and works closely with City leadership, elected officials, community partners, and residents to strengthen public infrastructure, improve mobility, enhance environmental and fleet services, and elevate the overall quality of life for everyone who lives in or visits Charleston.

Qualifications

The position requires a bachelor's degree in Public Works Administration, Civil Engineering, Construction Management, Public Administration, Transportation Planning, Engineering, Environmental Management, Business Administration, or a closely related field, with 15–19 years of progressively responsible experience in public works, municipal operations, infrastructure management, transportation, engineering, or related fields.

A master's degree in Public Administration, Business Administration, Engineering, Public Works Administration, Transportation Planning, or a closely related field is preferred, with 9–12 years of progressively responsible experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
