General Summary Under general supervision, a Police Officer performs law enforcement duties to protect life and property, enforce federal, state, and local laws, and maintain public peace within the Town of Latta Officers engage in proactive policing, emergency response, and community-oriented policing initiatives Essential Duties and Responsibilities Law Enforcement & Patrol Patrol assigned areas by vehicle and/or on foot to deter crime and ensure public safety Enforce laws of the State of South Carolina and local ordinances Respond to calls for service including disturbances, accidents
Investigations Conduct preliminary and follow-up investigations of crimes and incidents Interview victims, witnesses, and suspects; gather statements and evidence Prepare and execute arrest warrants and search warrants Collect, preserve, and document evidence according to legal standards Arrests & Court Duties Make lawful arrests using appropriate force when necessary Transport detainees safely and securely Testify in court and prepare detailed case reports Maintain knowledge of criminal procedures and constitutional law
Community Policing Build positive relationships with residents, businesses, and community groups Participate in community outreach and crime prevention programs Provide assistance and information to the public Emergency Response Respond to emergencies including medical calls, fires, and natural disasters Provide basic first aid/CPR until relieved by medical personnel Assist other agencies during major incidents
Minimum Qualifications High school diploma or GED (Associate’s degree preferred) Must be certified or able to become certified through the South Carolina Criminal Justice Academy Valid South Carolina driver’s license No felony convictions; good moral character
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Knowledge of criminal law, traffic law, and police procedures Ability to make sound decisions under pressure Strong communication and interpersonal skills Ability to write clear, concise reports Physical ability to perform law enforcement duties
Work Environment Shift work including nights, weekends, and holidays Exposure to hazardous and stressful situations Requires physical exertion including standing, running, lifting, and defensive actions
