Job Duties

Serves as the executive leader of the South Congaree Police Department. Responsible for the planning, direction, & management of departmental personnel, operations, policies & procedures, & long-range law enforcement strategies. Ensure compliance & enforcement of federal, state, & local laws, Town ordinances, & departmental policies. Requires a commitment to community engagement & public safety; protection of life & property; crime prevention; and the maintenance of public order. Interprets & implements new laws, regulations, & enforcement practices.

Maintains current knowledge of law enforcement trends, technologies, & best practices to guide innovation & effectiveness. Supervise & manage major crime scenes, tactical operations, & internal investigations. Leads departmental responses to critical incidents, emergencies, & natural disasters. Builds & maintains strong interagency relationships. Demonstrates integrity, professionalism, & sound judgment in all aspects of leadership. Prepares and presents statistical, operational, and financial reports to Council, Administrator, and external agencies.

Oversees recruitment, selection, training, certification, evaluation, & discipline of departmental personnel. Administers and monitors the department’s annual budget; allocates resources effectively & recommends future projects & capital needs. Performs essential physical duties, including walking, running, climbing, lifting 50–100 lbs., physically defending oneself, restraining individuals, & maintaining focus & mental preparedness during extended shifts (12–14 hours). Performs other duties as assigned to support the department’s mission & operational success.

Qualifications

EDUCATION: High School Diploma required, an Associate’s, Bachelor’s, or Master’s degree preferred. Graduation from an advanced law enforcement leadership program such as the FBI National Academy, Southern Police Institute, Northwestern School of Police Staff & Command, or equivalent is highly preferred. EXPERIENCE: Minimum of 10 years of progressively responsible law enforcement experience, including at least 5 years in a supervisory or command-level role within a comparably sized police dept. Military service and/or additional law enforcement experience may be considered.

Certifications and Licensure: Must possess & maintain a valid South Carolina Class 1 Law Enforcement Certification through the South Carolina Criminal Justice Academy (SCCJA). Out-of-state applicants must obtain SCCJA certification through required testing & training if hired. Must hold a valid South Carolina Class D driver’s license. Physical Requirements: Position classified as medium work, requiring exertion of 50-100 lbs. of force occasionally, up to 25 lbs. of force frequently, & up to 10 lbs. or force constantly to move objects, including the human body.

Involves regular activities such as speaking, hearing, using hands/fingers to handle or feel, frequently standing, walking, sitting, reaching w/ hands & arms, & performing repetitive motions. Occasional tasks include walking, running, climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, tasting, smelling, pushing, pulling & lifting. Vision & Communication demands include close vision, distance vision, depth perception, color recognition, night vision, peripheral vision, the ability to adjust focus, & vocal communication for expressing or exchanging ideas clearly & conveying details.
