Fire Chief, City of Seneca
The Fire Chief is responsible for the overall management and operation of the Fire Department, including fire suppression, prevention, and emergency response. Key responsibilities include: Emergency Leadership: Serves as incident commander at major emergency scenes. Department Management: Oversees all personnel, including scheduling, discipline, performance, and resolving employee issues.
Budget & Administration: Develops and manages the department budget, monitors expenditures, and prepares reports for the City Administrator. Fire Prevention & Compliance: Ensures inspections are conducted, fire codes are enforced, and prevention programs are implemented. Training & Development: Directs training programs and ensures all firefighters maintain required certifications. Policy & Planning: Establishes departmental policies and procedures in alignment with City directives.
Equipment & Resources: Evaluates and recommends equipment purchases and oversees resource planning. Communication & Representation: Serves as the primary liaison with the public, elected officials, and other agencies; represents the department in meetings and community interactions.
Requires an Associate’s degree in fire science, public administration, or a related field, along with at least 10 years of fire service experience, including 3 years in a supervisory role. Must be a Certified State Fire Marshal and have completed basic fire training (or an equivalent combination of education and experience). The role requires strong knowledge of fire suppression, prevention, safety regulations, and emergency response practices, along with the ability to lead and train personnel, make sound decisions, and communicate effectively with staff, officials, and the public.
