Job Duties

• Patrols designated areas to observe and check on homes, businesses and the general welfare. • Responds to specific incidents relayed by the dispatcher and conducts preliminary investigations when needed. • Prevents the commission of unlawful acts; apprehends criminals or other persons menacing the general public. • Enforces traffic and safety regulations for pedestrians and motor vehicles. • Serves warrants, subpoenas and other writs.

• Testifies in court as required. • Prepares detailed written incident and other reports. • Administers first aid to injured persons as needed. • Accompanies and maintains custody of individuals being taken to jail, court or detention centers. • Conducts searches and arrests when probable cause has been established in keeping with the laws of arrest, search and seizure. • Assists at special events as needed. • Maintains individual equipment in proper working order. • Refers to policy and procedures manuals, computer manuals, codes / laws / ordinances / regulations, publications

Qualifications

• United States Citizenship • 21 Years of Age • A High School Diploma or GED • A Current South Carolina Driver's License • No Conviction of a Felony or Crime of Moral Turpitude The selection process to become an employee of the City of Isle of Palms Police Department takes approximately forty-five (45) days from the close of the application process. The process includes: 1) a written test which assesses math, reading comprehension, spelling and grammar, 2) a physical agility test,

3) an oral interview panel, 4) a thorough background investigation to include criminal history, education verification, driving record and credit history, 5) a polygraph examination, 6) psychological testing, 7) a formal interview with the Chief of Police and 8) a medical examination to include drug screening. Applications are considered active for a period of two years. After two years, re-application must be made, provided there have been no disqualifications.
