Fire Marshal, City of Seneca
The Fire Marshal performs specialized fire prevention, inspection, investigation, and public education duties to protect life and property within the municipality. This position ensures compliance with applicable fire codes and ordinances, conducts inspections of new and existing structures, investigates fire causes, and supports overall fire department operations. Work is performed under limited supervision of the Fire Chief or designee.
Fire Prevention & Inspections Conducts fire code inspections for new and existing buildings, reviews plans for compliance, and inspects fire alarms, sprinklers, hood systems, hazardous materials storage, and life-safety equipment. They maintain inspection records, issue violations when needed, and complete follow-up inspections to ensure corrective actions are taken. Fire Investigation Responds to fire scenes to determine origin & cause, collects evidence, and prepares required reports. Coordinate with law enforcement, SLED, state investigators, & Insurance representatives as needed.
Public Education & Community Outreach Provides fire prevention education to schools, businesses, and community groups, assists with public events and demonstrations, and offers safety guidance to business owners, contractors, and the general public. Emergency Response & Department Support Responds to emergency incidents to support command functions, provides technical expertise on fire behavior and hazards, and participates in department training, drills, and activities.
Education and Experience Requires a high school diploma or GED, graduation from the Fire Training Academy, and five years of fire management experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Candidates should bring practical fire service knowledge and demonstrated experience performing firefighting, prevention, and supervisory duties in a municipal or comparable environment.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Requires strong knowledge of modern fire suppression and prevention practices, applicable laws, ordinances, and departmental procedures. Must be skilled with firefighting equipment, have basic computer proficiency, and understand first aid and resuscitation. Candidates must be physically capable, able to communicate clearly, make sound decisions, train and supervise staff, and maintain effective working relationships with coworkers, supervisors, and the public.
