Recreation Specialist, City of Laurens
The City of Laurens Parks & Recreation Department is seeking a motivated and community-focused individual to serve as a Recreation Specialist. This position supports the planning, coordination, and delivery of recreational programs, athletic activities, and special events for residents of all ages. The ideal candidate will have working knowledge of the sports and programs offered by the Department and be familiar with applicable rules and regulations, with the ability to officiate games when needed. Essential Duties and Responsibilities: • Plans, develops, schedules, supervises, and conducts
recreation programs, activities, and events, including but not limited to day camps, after-school programs, athletic leagues, senior activities, holiday programs, and special events. • Serves as program facilitator, instructor, or on-site supervisor as appropriate. • Assists with program and event budgeting; maintains accurate records of expenditures and revenues. • Registers participants, collects and receipts program fees, and maintains program records. • Procures supplies, materials, and equipment necessary for programs and events. • Promotes and assists with marketing of programs and
events through coordination with department staff. • Ensures a safe environment for participants by enforcing rules, monitoring activities, responding to incidents, and completing required documentation in accordance with department policies. • Evaluates programs and activities for effectiveness and makes recommendations for improvements or enhancements. • Utilizes recreation management software, spreadsheets, email, and basic office technology for scheduling, registration, communication, and reporting. • Performs related duties as assigned.
• Bachelor’s degree in parks, recreation and tourism, leisure services, or a related field, supplemented by one to two years of experience in parks and recreation programming, athletics, or child care; or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience. • Valid state driver’s license required. • CPR, First Aid, and AED certification required or ability to obtain within a designated timeframe.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: • Strong communication and interpersonal skills. • Ability to interact professionally and positively with the public. • Experience with program coordination, scheduling, and supervision. • Basic knowledge of grant writing, carpentry, and general maintenance or trades skills is beneficial. • Ability to work independently and as part of a team in a fast-paced, community-oriented environment.
Physical Requirements • Physical duties may include field and facility maintenance, grass cutting, edging, cleaning, driving, walking, bending, stooping, and lifting heavy items as required. • Must be able to work outdoors in varying weather conditions. Supervision • Works under the general supervision of the Parks and Recreation Director. Salary commensurate with experience and qualifications.
