Director of Planning, City of Greenwood
The City of Greenwood in conjunction with Greenwood County is seeking an experienced and forward-thinking Director of Planning to lead the County’s comprehensive planning, zoning, land use, and development review functions. Greenwood County is an expanding community in the Upstate region of South Carolina, experiencing increased development activity and strategic investment. This highly responsible executive-level position provides visionary leadership to support sustainable growth, regulatory compliance, and long-range community development initiatives.
• Direct and oversee all County/City planning, zoning, and land development functions. • Lead preparation and implementation of the Comprehensive Plan and all related ordinances. • Manage development review processes including rezonings, subdivisions, and site plans. • Provide professional recommendations to County Council, Planning Commission, and Board of Zoning Appeals. • Supervise and develop planning staff and departmental operations. • Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local regulations.
• Collaborate with regional partners, municipalities, and economic development organizations. • Prepare and administer the departmental budget. • Administers Floodplain Plan. • Support strategic growth management and long-range planning initiatives.
Required: • Bachelor’s degree in Urban Planning, Public Administration, Geography, or related field. • Minimum five years of progressively responsible planning experience, including supervisory experience. • Strong knowledge of zoning, land use law, and comprehensive planning principles. • Valid driver’s license.
Preferred: • Master’s degree in Planning or related field • AICP certification • Certified Floodplain Manager • Experience in county or municipal government in the Southeast • Experience presenting to elected bodies
