Community Service Officer/Code Enforcement Officer, Town of Kiawah Island
As a Community Service Officer, you will represent the Town and its Public Safety Department, often serving as the first point of contact for residents, property owners, and visitors. You will help maintain a safe and orderly community by ensuring compliance with municipal ordinances while building positive relationships with those you encounter. Your work directly supports the quality of life our community expects.
Your day-to-day work will vary and may include: • Assisting residents, property owners, and visitors and responding to community concerns • Patrolling the Town’s municipal boundaries • Enforcing Town ordinances and issuing citations when necessary • Conducting short-term rental inspections • Assisting with traffic management and crowd control at special events • Responding to non-emergency calls for service • Representing the Town in Municipal Court • Coordinating with sworn officer
Strong documentation and record-keeping are essential, as is the ability to exercise sound judgment in the field. During emergencies, including hurricane season, you will be part of the Town’s public safety and damage assessment team. This role offers the opportunity to engage meaningfully with the people who live, work, and visit here— and to take on new challenges as they arise.
• Associate degree required; or four (4) years of relevant experience in lieu of a degree. Bachelor’s degree preferred • Valid South Carolina driver's license (or ability to obtain by start date) • First Aid and CPR certification (training provided) • Computer proficiency, including Microsoft Word and Excel and job-specific platforms (such as Citizenserve and Watch Tower)
Skills and Abilities: • Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to explain information clearly and de-escalate tense situations • A calm, professional demeanor and commitment to public service • The ability to enforce ordinances fairly and impartially while treating everyone with respect • Sound judgment and the ability to work independently while knowing when to seek guidance
