The South Carolina State Historic Preservation Office awarded Main Street South Carolina a $15,400 matching grant to develop statewide historic preservation training for local governments. The project will be supported in part by federal funds from the National Park Service, administered by the South Carolina Department of Archives and History.
Designed as professional development training, grant funds will help develop a new historic preservation education series. While the target audience is South Carolina's Certified Local Governments and boards of architectural review, the materials and trainings created will be applicable to individuals and organizations with general interest in historic preservation of historic commercial districts.
"As the state coordinating program, Main Street SC stresses the importance of preservation ethics and education and best practices for place-based, people-focused design," said Jenny Boulware, manager of Main Street SC. "Our rural communities have fought hard to maintain the historic character of their downtown areas. However, South Carolina's rural communities do not have the human or financial resources to provide much-needed preservation training and education. This project fills that gap by providing accessible, comprehensive design education and training."
