Job Duties

Reporting directly to the Director of Planning & Community Development, the Planner I is expected to perform review and analysis of applications for site plan approval, subdivisions and related plans/documents, variances, warrants, and special use permits, planned developments, landscape plans, map amendments, text amendments, building permits, and customer service for the daily activities of the Town’s Planning & Community Development Department.

• Performs development plan and building permit application review for compliance with adopted plans and policies. • Provides information and instruction regarding building and planning review, zoning, permitting processes, and common code questions/enforcement. • Performs subdivision plat review. • Conducts data collection, research, and analysis for staff reports/presentations and studies as assigned. • Assists with processing and review of applications for annexation. • Assists with the review and update of the Town’s Comprehensive Plan, including amendments

• Assists with the drafting and presentation of proposed policy changes. • Participates in meetings and public hearings as assigned. • Work requires coordination with various Town departments, local governments and agencies, Town Council, Planning Commission, Board of Zoning Appeals, developer representatives, consultants and the public. • Work requires creation of high-quality cartographic materials to be utilized by Town staff using ESRI software. • Maintains the official Town of Ridgeland Geographic Information Systems data layers and maps

Qualifications

A Bachelor's or Master’s degree in Planning, Urban Design, Landscape Architecture, Public Administration, Political Science, Economic Development or a related field. For candidates with a Bachelor’s degree, a minimum of one (1) year of planning/community development experience is required, or any equivalent combination of education and experience

Possession of an appropriate driver's license valid in the State of South Carolina or Georgia, depending upon state of residency.

• Knowledge of development review processes. • Knowledge of the principles, methods and practices of urban planning. • Knowledge of federal, state and municipal legislation impacting municipal government planning efforts. • Knowledge of research techniques and sources of information, current literature and recent developments regarding urban planning and development review. • Knowledge and experience with Geographic Information Systems; experience with Microsoft Office Suite. • Knowledge of job-related software such as Adobe software, Photoshop, InDesign, Adobe Acrobat

Pay Info
$55,000 - $65,000 with employee health/dental benefits paid, participation in State Retirement Plan
