Job Duties

The City of Cayce is seeking a qualified and motivated attorney to serve as a Part-Time or PRN Public Defender. This position offers a flexible, as-needed schedule with no set hours and is ideal for candidates seeking a part-time public interest legal work in criminal defense.

Represent indigent defendants in Cayce Municipal Court, including coverage on Tuesdays at 8:00 AM and Thursdays at 2:30 PM. Must be available on an as-needed basis for pretrials and jury trials, which may be scheduled any weekday, Monday through Friday. Provide legal counsel to clients from initial appearance through resolution, including advising on plea offers, trial strategy, and sentencing. Maintain timely communication with clients and their families regarding case status and legal options. Work collaboratively with court staff, prosecutors, and law enforcement while maintaining zeal.

Qualifications

Requires a Juris Doctor (J.D.) from an accredited law school, active membership in good standing with the South Carolina Bar, and a valid driver’s license.

Experience in criminal defense, public defense, or trial work preferred. Ability to demonstrate strong advocacy skills, legal judgment, and commitment to ethical representation.

Pay Info
Hourly compensation based on experience OR part-time salary with benefits package (for eligible candidates).
