Arraignments and Initial Hearings/ Warrants and Probable Cause Determinations. Conduct first appearances for arrested individuals, ensuring they are informed of their charges and constitutional rights. Assist in appointing a public defender for eligible defendants and determine bond conditions or pre-trial detention as appropriate. Review and issue arrest and search warrants, ensuring they meet legal requirements and are supported by probable cause.

Handling After-Hours Court Matters/ Jail Visits. Address legal emergencies during weekends, evenings, and holidays, including time-sensitive motions or hearings. Be available for clarification from law enforcement officers regarding legal procedures or court orders. Conduct hearings and arraignments at detention facilities when detainees cannot be transported to court in a timely manner.

Communication and Collaboration: Maintain communication with police departments and detention centers for timely case processing. Provide guidance to law enforcement officers on legal questions and procedural issues.

Qualifications

Certification Strongly Preferred. Completed the required training set by the South Carolina Supreme Court for Municipal Court Judges. Substantive knowledge of criminal law and South Carolina Rules of Criminal Procedure and Evidence. Strong decision-making abilities and the ability to remain objective and fair under pressure. Ability to balance public safety with individual rights in urgent and time-sensitive matters.
