Heavy Equipment Operator, City of Myrtle Beach
May serve as a lead worker; provides guidance and instruction to other crew members; and reviews work as assigned. Adheres to established safety procedures; monitors work environment and use of safety equipment to ensure safety of employees and other individuals; flags and directs traffic and places markers, signs and cones around project/work site to ensure safety of crew and the traveling public; and follows safety practices and wears protective gear; initiates any actions necessary to correct deviations or violations.
Drives or operates a variety of varied purpose equipment in the maintenance and repair of City streets, rights of way, parks, water and sewer lines, and in the collection of solid waste; performs driving functions in a safe and efficient manner under various conditions, including day/night hours, in congested traffic, and in adverse weather conditions. Works as a crew member for assigned maintenance projects: cuts and cleans ditches; installs water, sewer, and storm drain systems; constructs and repairs streets and rights of way; repairs pot holes; pours, sets and finishes concrete work.
Conducts pre- and post-trip inspections, including checking all fluids, gauges, lighting, mirrors, tires, body damage, seats and seatbelts, cleanliness of vehicle, etc.; loads and unloads equipment and supplies; reports all problems or necessary repairs to appropriate personnel immediately; completes and maintains inspection, gas usage and other associated documentation. Performs daily preventive maintenance work on equipment and vehicles; services and makes minor repairs to equipment and vehicles.
High school diploma or GED; supplemented by two years of experience that includes equipment operation; or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for this job. Must possess and maintain a valid South Carolina Commercial Driver's License (CDL) including appropriate endorsement(s). May be required to obtain a trenching certification.
