The purpose of the position is to provide entry-level firefighting duties for the City. The position is responsible for responding to fire emergencies, maintaining fire trucks and equipment, and participating in fire suppression programs. The position works according to set procedures under direct supervision.

Performs fire suppression, rescue and medical first responder duties assigned by company officer; rescues victims and administers emergency medical aid; assists citizens with medical emergencies, performing emergency medical procedures. Operates firefighting equipment; ventilates smoke-filled areas; salvages the contents of buildings; may assist in the recovery from natural disasters. Inspects, cleans and maintains fire apparatus and firefighting equipment. Prepares logbooks and fire reports documenting fire activities.

Assists in fire prevention programs; conducts lectures or demonstrations on fire safety issues to the local community; promotes public safety cooperation and awareness with school and civic groups; establishes positive community relations. Reviews fire science literature to keep abreast of technological developments and changing administrative practices and policies; participates in fire training programs. Handling or using machines, tools, or equipment requiring moderate instruction and experience such as, firefighting apparatus, emergency medical equipment, communication equipment, computers or may maintain and repair firefighting apparatus.
