Job Duties

Conducts inspections on new and existing buildings to ensure adherence to fire and life safety codes and ordinances; conducts follow-up inspections to ensure that corrective action has been taken; inspects alterations and/or repairs; issues burning permits after ensuring conformance with State rules and regulations and City codes. Provides code interpretations, suggestions, and advice to the general public and departmental personnel.

Conducts inspections on various structures including day care centers, foster homes, schools, etc. Inspects fire suppression systems such as standpipes, hood systems, sprinkler systems, etc. Witnesses all tests required by the NFPA and International Fire Code to ensure compliance with Codes and to ensure safe and proper operation. Conducts occupancy inspections of all new occupancies. Keeps Fire Department personnel updated on local business expansions, changes, contents, etc. Attends required fire prevention and public safety meetings.

Performs public fire safety education talks to the public using fire education materials. Enters inspection reports, training reports, smoke detector records, and incident reports into a computer. Responds to fire emergency incidents to assist command staff with Incident Command System (ICS) command functions.

Qualifications

Requires high school diploma or GED equivalent and minimum five years of experience in fire suppression, fire prevention and/or education. Prefer Associate’s Degree in Fire Science, Business Management, Public Administration and a minimum of three years of experience in fire suppression, fire prevention, and/or education.

NFPA/IFSAC Firefighter II; NIMS ICS 100, 200, 300, 400, 700; Fire Officer I. SC Certified Resident Fire Marshal; and Car Safety Seat Technician.

Able to obtain ICC Fire Inspector I within one year of hire date and Fire Inspector II within three years of date of hire. Must possess and maintain a valid state Class E or F driver’s license with an acceptable driving history.

Pay Info
Salary dependent upon experience; minimum salary $52,435 year.
