Building Official, City of Isle of Palms
The purpose of this position is to perform specialized field and office duties in order to administer the building codes, land use regulations, flood zone regulations and other ordinances of the City of Isle of Palms. • Interprets and explains building codes, land use regulations, flood zone regulations, and other ordinances to property owners, contractors, developers and individuals. • Reviews plans for new construction for compliance with all relevant codes and approves same prior to issuance of a building permit.
• Inspects building, electrical, plumbing and mechanical systems for general quality of construction and compliance with all relevant codes. • Conducts frequent visual surveys of the City for unauthorized construction and unlicensed business activity. • Recommends to the administration changes in City policies and regulations when such is advisable. • Assists in the organization and maintenance of accurate building inspection and business license records. • Assists in the preparation and dissemination of departmental administrative reports for use by the City Administrator
• Handles complaints from the general public or City personnel about possible code violations. • Inspects lots, buildings, signs, premises for unsanitary, substandard or unauthorized conditions.
• Bachelor’s of Arts or Sciences in Construction, Engineering or related field; • Five (5) years of direct experience in the construction industry or closely related field and training in accordance with the International Building Code and the laws of the State of South Carolina; • Or equivalent education and/or experience; and • ICC certified Building Official, Plumbing Inspector, Mechanical and Gas Inspector, Residential and Commercial Electrical Inspector, Residential and Commercial Building Inspector. • Valid State of South Carolina Driver’s License.
