Four Main Street South Carolina programs earned national Accredited status, the top tier of recognition by Main Street America. The Aiken Downtown Development Association, Uptown Greenwood, Main Street Hartsville and Main Street Laurens all achieved Accredited status.
This designation signifies a demonstrated commitment to comprehensive community revitalization and a proven track record of successfully applying the Main Street Approach.
Twelve downtown programs across South Carolina achieved the Affiliate status. The status indicates that these programs are on the pathway to achieving meaningful economic, social, physical and organizational improvements in their downtowns and commercial districts. Those programs are Main Street Cheraw, Main Street Kingstree, North Augusta Forward, Main Street Clinton, Downtown Florence, Get Into Gaffney, See Lancaster, Main Street Manning, Corner Renaissance of Moncks Corner, Downtown Orangeburg Revitalization Association, Downtown Sumter and Downtown Camden.
"We are proud to recognize our South Carolina communities as part of a national movement of more than 860 nationally Accredited Main Street America programs," said Jenny Boulware, manager of Main Street South Carolina. "These programs exemplify the hard work and dedication of various stakeholders, community leaders, organizational staff, and volunteers committed to making their communities better places for us now, and in years to come."
Main Street programs work to revitalize authentic, older communities and build vibrant, thriving economies where people choose to live and businesses choose to invest, Boulware said.
"Our current health and economic crisis have demonstrated that our programs are the ones delivering boots on the ground technical assistance services, guidance and resources to businesses when they need it the most," she said.
Main Street South Carolina empowers residents, business owners and local officials with the knowledge, skills, tools and organizational structure necessary to revitalize their downtowns and neighborhood commercial districts into vibrant centers of commerce and community.
Main Street South Carolina follows the National Main Street's Four Point Approach — economic vitality, design, promotion and organization. Each year, Main Street South Carolina recognizes members' achievements and successes in downtown revitalization.
