Police Officer, City of Beaufort

Full time, 12.5 hour shifts

Job Duties:
  • Responds to emergency or high-risk situations; participates in criminal and other investigations. Performs general law enforcement duties, including patrolling assigned areas, checking property for security, maintaining order and public safety, responding to traffic accidents/incidents, and issuing citations, serving warrants and other legal papers, apprehending, and arresting suspects, questioning suspects, assisting crime and accident victims, investigating alarms, collecting evidence, taking statements, etc.
  • Reports all conditions which may affect the community under the philosophy of community policing, including lighting changes, pedestrian and traffic obstacles, hazardous conditions, traffic lights, etc. Performs various public service duties, including directing traffic at school crossings and during special events, providing police escort, assisting stranded motorists, providing security at City events, conducts vehicle safety check points, etc.
  • Will conduct daily traffic enforcement with the goal of reducing collisions in the City of Beaufort. Serves warrants, summonses, subpoenas, and other official papers. Provides court testimony as required. Make arrests with probable cause, books, transports, and processes prisoners in accordance with State and Federal Law, City Ordinance, and department policy. Receives and responds to citizen inquiries, complaints, and requests for assistance; refers public to persons or agencies which can provide further assistance as required.

  • Must be 21 years of age. Must have a high school diploma or general education development (GED) equivalent. Must be a US Citizen. Must obtain a valid SC driver’s license before the date of the hire. Must have a clean criminal record (no felonies, serious misdemeanors, criminal domestic violence, or crimes of moral turpitude).
  • Must have a clean driving history, with no convictions for driving under the influence, driving under suspension, or leaving the scene of an accident within the past ten years. Convictions for speeding must be minium. Must have an Honorable Discharge if previously served in the military. If currently employed as a certified officer, the candidate must have a favorable work history with their department. Must have no prior history of illicit drug use, which conflicts with department policy. Must be able to pass all phases of the hiring process.

Pay Info:
Salary Range is: $39,130 ‐ $46,956 annually
