Engineer - Electric, City of Orangeburg, Department of Public Utilities

Position Hours:
Full time, 8 a.m. - 5 p.m., Monday through Friday

Job Duties:
  • This position provides technical and engineering expertise in planning, designing, construction, and maintenance of transmission lines, pole upgrades and rebuilds, distribution projects, and construction projects for the Department of Public Utilities. Prepares plans and designs for transmission lines/pole upgrades and rebuilds. Reviews, modifies, and creates Standards for electric distribution line construction projects. Analyze survey reports, maps, drawings, blueprints, aerial photography, and other topographical data to plan projects. Review and assist in various Substation inspections.
  • Review, assist, and provide reports for Substation commissioning. Maintains inventory of materials to complete projects. Ensures compliance with all applicable codes, laws, rules, regulations, standards, guidelines, policies and procedures. Maintains an awareness of new technologies, technical methods, trends, and advances in the profession. Processes a variety of documentation associated with department/division operations, within designated timeframes and per established procedures.
  • Operates a personal computer and other electronic devices to enter, retrieve, review or modify data, utilizing spreadsheet, database, Internet, e-mail, or other software; and operates general office or other equipment as necessary to complete essential functions. Utilizes maintenance, work order, or department-specific software to issue, receive and complete work orders as required. Communicates with supervisor, DPU employees, outside agencies, customers, the public, and other individuals. May be required to work after normal business hours, weekends, holidays, and Standby Duty.

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Civil, Electrical or Mechanical Engineering or a related field required; supplemented by five years of experience in planning and designing electrical, mechanical, or communication systems; or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for this job. Specific License or Certification Required: Must possess and maintain a valid South Carolina Driver’s License. Possession and maintenance of a South Carolina Professional Engineer’s license is preferred.
  • Must have an understanding of engineering theories and principles, and practices of researching engineering and design issues, evaluating alternatives, preparing and presenting recommendations. Must be able to operate a computer and/or tablet to enter, retrieve, review or modify data, utilizing word processing, database, e-mail, or other software. Must be able to demonstrate proficiency in performance of the essential functions and learn, comprehend, and apply all City or departmental policies, practices, and procedures necessary to function effectively in the position.
