Municipal Judge, City of Clemson

Full time, Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., with some weekends on call
Under little or no direct supervision, arbitrates disputes, advises counsel, jury, litigants, or court personnel, and administers municipal judicial system. Work involves supervising court clerks and other court staff. Reports to City Council.
Establishes rules of procedure on questions for which standard procedures have not been established by law or by superior court. Examines evidence in criminal cases to determine if evidence will support charges.
Listens to presentation of case, rules on admissibility of evidence and methods of conducting testimony, and settles disputes between opposing attorneys or parties.
Instructs jury on applicable law and directs jury to deduce facts from evidence presented. Sentences defendant in criminal or traffic cases; defendants convicted by jury, according to statutes of state or municipal government. Conducts bond hearings; releases defendants as appropriate. Issue arrest and search warrants.
Handles on call duty every other weekend and the scheduling.
Requires a high school diploma or GED equivalent previous court experience is desirable; and must have completed a training program and passed certification examination, or must complete a training program and pass certification examination,within one year of taking office, and a recertification examination every eight years thereafter. Must successfully complete annual training as required by SC Court Administration, or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities.
$60,000 - $80,000 annually, depending on qualifications
