Technician, Instrumentation & Control – Electric Division, Orangeburg Department of Public Utilities

This full-time position performs skilled work in the installation, maintenance, calibration, and repair of electronic instruments and automatic process control equipment for the electric division of the Department of Public Utilities.

Job duties:

  • Provides routine and complex maintenance and repair services to electrical, electronic, supervisory control and data acquisition systems and related systems and equipment at DPU facilities as assigned; inspects, tests, adjusts, calibrates, and services equipment and systems; ensures proper operation of equipment and systems; identifies and corrects equipment and system errors and failures; locates, repairs or replaces defective circuits, modules, digital interfaces and other electronic parts; ensures equipment and systems conform with plans and specifications; and prepares new, or modifies existing, operating and maintenance records as needed
  • Conducts operational integrity and safety tests, functional tests, acceptance tests, etc.; verifies proper operation of safety monitoring detection and alarm systems; identifies and corrects system failures; maintains logs of test results; performs manual labor tasks; installs equipment, fiber optic cables, and related components; pulls wires; removes and replaces parts; gathers and transports tools and supplies; prepares work site; and cleans up after work is completed
  • Assists in locating and coordinating materials and purchase requisitions for replacement equipment, materials and parts; reviews equipment contracts for vendor, part number, warranty eligibility, etc.; and prepares and submits required documentation


  • Associate degree in electronic engineering technology or a related field required supplemented with two years of experience in installation, maintenance and repair of electronic instruments and controls; or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for this job
  • Must possess and maintain a valid South Carolina driver's license. Must obtain and maintain a valid South Carolina Commercial Driver's License  within 12 months in position
  • Must have ability to read and understand electrical, electronic and mechanical schematics, drawings, blueprints and technical data instructions; must have ability to use electrical, optic, and electronic measuring instruments, including other test or calibration equipment such as oscilloscopes, frequency generators and electronic counters; must be able to demonstrate proficiency in performance of the essential functions and learn, comprehend, and apply all city or departmental policies, practices and procedures necessary to function effectively in the position
