Technician, Field Engineering – Electric Division, Orangeburg Department of Public Utilities

Position Category: Engineering

This full-time position prepares skilled engineering drawings for large and complex electric division projects and systems, coordinates assigned division activities, or other tasks, as assigned. Incumbents in this classification handle large and complex division projects and have at least three years of experience in electrical systems design.

Job duties:

  • Drafts plans for large and complex division projects for the maintenance, repair and construction of electric distribution systems; creates and modifies plans, skilled engineering drawings, specifications, details, maps, plats and other displays engineering projects using GPS and GIS software; identifies areas needing attention; stakes jobs; processes line locate requests; and works with engineers, contractors and other staff to aid the development of solutions for resolving city electric distribution needs
  • Participates in coordinating daily work activities of line crews; confers with other staff to obtain direction and make recommendations regarding work assignments and priorities; organizes tasks in order to complete assigned work; confers with co-workers, assists with complex or problem situations, and provides technical expertise; and assists with training and instructing co-workers regarding operational procedures and proper use of equipment
  • Provides customer service regarding division services and engineering activities; meets with and responds to customers and businesses; provides information and answers questions regarding division projects and new and existing services; performs load analysis to ensure correct transformer capacity; and performs design and staking activities in support of resolving services issues

Qualifications:

  • Associate degree in engineering or a related field required
  • Fifteen or more years of experience in electrical engineering design; or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for this job
  • Must possess and maintain a valid South Carolina driver's license
