The Municipal Association began its Trades Certification program in 1965 and currently offers exams in
- electrical
- plumbing (based on the International Plumbing Code 2006)
- heating and air (based on the IMC 2006)
- gas fitting (based on the International Fuel Gas Code 2006)
- sheet metal (based on the IMC 2006)
- pipefitting (based on the IMC 2006)
A national testing firm gives the certification exams 28 times a year in six different locations around the state.
For issuing licenses and permits, most political subdivisions recognize the Association's certificate as an indication of a tradesman's skill level. More than 3,000 tradesmen hold certification cards.
