Trades certification

The Municipal Association began its Trades Certification program in 1965 and currently offers exams in

  • electrical
  • plumbing (based on the International Plumbing Code 2006)
  • heating and air (based on the IMC 2006)
  • gas fitting (based on the International Fuel Gas Code 2006)
  • sheet metal (based on the IMC 2006)
  • pipefitting (based on the IMC 2006)

A national testing firm gives the certification exams 28 times a year in six different locations around the state.

For issuing licenses and permits, most political subdivisions recognize the Association's certificate as an indication of a tradesman's skill level. More than 3,000 tradesmen hold certification cards.
