Law makes crime of abandoning boats

Abandoning a watercraft or an outboard motor on public lands or waters is now illegal following passage of legislation in the 2008 session. The new law defines abandoned watercraft as any craft that has been moored, stranded, wrecked, sinking or sunk, and has been left unattended for more than 45 days. Abandoning a watercraft will result in fines of $1,000 to $5,000 and up to 30 days in jail. Boats left because of emergency situations where the owner is expected to recover the craft are not included.
